- Just as there is a huge difference in price, there is also a huge
- difference in performance. Asking for a modem which is least expensive
- yet most interoperable is a conflict of terms. You're going to have to
- decide which is most important to you, price or performance. There is no
- middle of the road.
-
- All the modems today are FAX modems... it's a feature which is thrown in
- for free. Forget trying to nickle-dime it. Bite the bullet.
-
- Is a $450 modem 3 times as good as a $150 modem? In my opinion, YES.
-
- Is there something in a $450 modem that you don't need? Not in my
- opinion.
-
- The V.34 "standard" has to be looked upon as a "toolbox". Anyone can
- build a V34 compliant modem but only offer a few of the tools. A
- "communications carpenter' carrying the toolbox with only a few of the
- tools in it might not be able to build as nice of a connection as the
- communications carpenter who has all the tools.
-
- But each "tool" in the V34 arsenal carries with it an intellectual
- property load..... a patent.... which means that the manufacturer who
- offers the most "tools" in their V34 toolbox also has invested the most
- in licensing fees to bring it to you. V.34 modems ARE NOT created
- equal, and you most certainly do get more when you pay more.
-
- By "tools" I'm not talking about features such as dialback security and
- fax and so forth. What I'm talking about are things like Asymmetrical
- speed leveling, constellation shaping, dynamic transmit level adjusting,
- level preemphasis, and etc. Technical stuff.
-
- You get what you pay for.
